ANTIC'S '86 MUSICAL CHRISTMAS CARD -- AN ST SPECTACULAR
ANTIC has a Christmas present for ST owners -- a spectacular
color graphic Christmas slide show accompanied by MIDI-compatible
music. This Christmas slide show was created by Audio Light, Inc.
The file will take some time to download, but trust us, it's worth
every minute.
It's a sneak preview of the musical graphics you'll be able to
create with two impressive new ST programs soon to be released by
Audio Light, Inc. of Los Gatos, CA -- a music composition system and
a graphic design program.
When you download the Christmas Card you'll see quaint holiday
scenery and hear the classic Christmas carol "Silent Night" in three
very distinct voices. You'll hear the ST sound chip stretched to its
limits to create an echoing snare drum in "Little Drummer Boy."
During "We Wish You a Merry Christmas," you'll hear the ST reproduce
woodwind sounds and see the first use ever of a color digitized
photograph on the ST. You'll also hear the ST try its hand at an
upbeat bass line in "Jingle Bells," and some impressive contrapuntal
rhythms in "Deck the Halls."
Those ST owners lucky enough to own a MIDI capable synthesizer
(such as the Casio CZ-101) can hook it up to their computer and hear
some truly impressive MIDI sounds (which may be played in unison with
the sound chip, should you be in the mood for a computer duet).
The music in this demo was created with the as-of-yet untitled
Audio Light music system which will be marketed by Activision. One
nice thing about this program is that it works with the existing ST
sound chip as well as MIDI. It will also be one of the first
opportunities for ST owners with Casio, or Yamaha, or other MIDI
compatibles to see what their synthesizers were really designed for.
The graphics were created by Peter Wickman with another Audio
Light program, N-Vision Graphics. This system, currently available
for the IBM PC and Commodore 64, uses an advanced windowing system
with pop-up and pull-down menus.
ANTIC will be describing the music system in greater detail in
the future. For now, let's just say this program is the closest
thing to a full-featured computerized sound studio we've seen on a
PC.
It's almost entirely mouse controlled with multiple tracks,
redefinable envelope and patch bays, sheet music printout capability,
etc. etc. Each line of musical sounds is printed to the screen in a
different color (the program is designed for low-resolution) and
notes can be cut and then pasted, transposed, and more. You can work
on as many as 16 sounds simultaneouslyj.
Audio Light came to the Antic offices to demonstrate a final
version of their system this week. But Activision, in an unusual
holiday season marketing move, is reportedly waiting for the Amiga
version to be completed before releasing the product and no price has
been announced. Expect to see it on dealer shelves in March.
HOW TO DOWNLOAD
ANTIC will be uploading these Christmas files shortly,
into DL-6 of the ATARI 16-bit Forum. (GO ATARI16 to get there.)
There are seven picture files and seven accompanying song files,
plus an auto-player/slide show program. (That's right folks, 15
files!) The picture files have .PIC extenders, the song files have
.SNG extenders, and the controlling program is called ALITE.PRG. You
won't need to download all 15 files to make this work. All you need
is the controller program and one each of the picture and song files.
To download the files, first format a blank ST disk. Now,
download -- in this order -- ALITE.PRG, 1ALITE.PIC, 1ALITE.SNG,
2ALITE.PIC, 2ALITE.SNG, etc. It's important that the files be
written to the disk in the correct order, but you can rename later to
fit their descriptions.
As mentioned, you can download as few as three files to make
this work but those with true holiday spirit will want to collect the
whole set!
For a disk of additional song files and information on how to
combine picture and song files in your own slide shows, send $15 to
Audio Light, Inc., 146 Town Terrace, Suite #4, Los Gatos, CA 95030,
(415) 239-8473.
